It's Your Turn: Provide Feedback on the Seawall Program Goals

Help us direct priorities by weighing-in on the Embarcadero Seawall Program goals. Your insights and feedback are invaluable as we think both short- and long-term about the waterfront. Read the abridged goals below - or the full goals here - and add your comments/ideas/feedback below.

These draft goals were shared during Community #3 in January 2018. Couldn't attend but want to learn more? View the Community Meeting presentations here. Want more information on the Embarcadero Seawall? Read our "learn more" page.

STRENGTHEN GOALS

  • Protect life safety and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Protect and enhance assets where possible
  • Minimize disruption to the Port and the City
  • Use Adapt and Envision phases to inform strategies

ADAPT GOALS

  • Protect the most important waterfront assets
  • Enhance assets where possible
  • Minimize disruption to the Port and the City
  • Enhance Bay and shoreline ecology

ENVISION GOALS

  • Protect unique and critical assets
  • Create future shoreline assets and economic opportunities
  • Improve health of the Bay and waterfront
  • Maintain world class waterfront destination

The Embarcadero Seawall Program, led by the Port of San Francisco in coordination with the City, will provide the tools to address current and future flood and seismic risks over time. There are three elements to the Program – Strengthen, Adapt and Envision – which allow the Port to respond to risks and conditions in a way that is transparent and accountable. Planning for all three elements is occurring now, implementation for each element will depend upon findings, public input, regulatory input, cost/benefit analysis, and availability of funding and financing.

At the June 27 meeting there was a call to have the Seawall Resilience invited to gatherings. Perhaps you could take part, at least have a presence, at the monthly meetings most SFPD precincts have. Surely Northern, Central, Southern and Bayview residents have an interest in waterfront plans.

Plans do not show extent of seawall and rising sea-water issues around SF... Consider issues on sewage treatment and energy creation along with transit and access.

Improve Transit all the way along the waterfront, including Chrissy Field and the Marina Green providing public access to public parks, and create energy creation opportunities along the seawall. Make sure you include areas north and south out towards brisbane, vis-valley and india basin candlestick point by including ferry terminals and adjustable waterfront features.

Provide adequate EQUITABLE redevelopment of the sea wall extending to the Golden Gate Bridge and around to Geneva Harney and Vis-Valley, with transportation and energy creating infrastructure for the city! Do not stop the extent as shown, and make sure you consider the whole area impacted.

Please see the table notes on the draft goals from Community Meeting #3:Table: Strengthen #2• “Public $ spent only on public assets not private”• “Who benefits v. who pays”• “Not looking at 500 yr event for risk management”Table: Adapt #2• “Utilities”• “Recycling, sorting facilities; transport/access to work; jobs along waterfront”Table: Adapt #3• “Prioritize permanent residences over commercial/tourism”Table: Envision #1• “Think of new coastline as an asset rather than a detriment”Table: Envision #3• Greater emphasis on economic generators - “Resilience will cost money – how do we cover cost?”
